Fatigue and sleep deprivation Faculty and residents are educated to recognize the signs of fatigue and sleep deprivation and must adopt and apply policies to prevent and counteract its potential negative effects on patient care and learning. This occurs with several web-based training modules available through and mandated by the institution for both faculty and residents. The Fatigue module covers: 1. understanding the hazards of fatigue 2. recognizing the signs and symptoms of fatigue 3. learning to manage fatigue. We also use the Crew Training module to educate housestaff. We monitor hours including moonlighting through scheduling and through New Innovations. Concerns about fatigue and potential sleep deprivation should be handled through any or all of the following: 1. The Chief Residents 2. the faculty mentor 3. the Program Director.
